Delightfully tucked among the mountains, lakes, forests, and rivers of southern interior British Columbia is the beautiful town of Sicamous. Incorporated in 1989, Sicamous is a young, energetic, growing community with a stable and expanding economy. Known as the â??Houseboat Capital of Canadaâ?, this gem of a recreation spot is becoming widely known as a great place to live year-round, causing Sicamous real estate to be a great value. About halfway between Calgary, Alberta and Vancouver, British Columbia on the Trans Canada Highway, Sicamous is the small town (population just over 3,100) with almost too much to do all year long. In the summer, water sports are the most popular. Located between the Mara and Shuswap Lakes on the channel that joins the lakes and bisected by the Eagle River, Sicamous real estate should be an investment any water recreation lover will investigate. Water sports at Sicamous include swimming, sunbathing, houseboating, powerboating, kayaking, canoeing, and wakeboarding. Fishing for over 19 species of fish in the crystal blue lakes and rivers is also very popular. Other warm season reasons to invest in Sicamous real estate are hiking, cycling, golfing, observing wildlife, bird watching, and camping. Of course, houseboating is the major summer activity and to meet the demands of the summer visitors there are hundreds of houseboats available for rent. Also nearby, from any piece of Sicamous real estate, are attractions the whole family can enjoy together, such as the â??Enchanted Forestâ?. You can zip-line in the forest at Sky Trek Adventures, visit Crazy Creek Falls on the Crazy Creek Suspension Bridge or learn about Canadian railroad history at Craigellachie, the site of the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railroadâ??s expansion from sea to sea. An investment in Sicamous real estate will continue to pay off as the crowds of summer dwindle and the fall and winter activities begin. The Sicamous area has some of the best snowmobiling terrain in western Canada. Also available are, sledding, snowboarding, ice-skating, and cross-country skiing. Nearby you also have downhill skiing and ice fishing remains a popular winter sport. Sicamous real estate values are sustained by the year-round revenue stream that comes from its businesses centered on the traffic that comes through town on the Trans Canadian Highway. Sicamous real estate values will no doubt be increasing with some new luxury home communities developing in the immediate area. Created to meet the needs of busy business people and professionals who need a place for rest and relaxation, these new homes and planned communities are sure to increase the interest in Sicamous real estate. The smart investor is looking at Sicamous real estate as an investment for the future and an investment in fun right now.

This article is the first in a series about the dream, reality and many obsticles facing the expat living in Spain’s Costa Blanca, Costa Calida or Murcia. This first part deals with whom, why and how people end up falling for the dream of living in the sun and how it can be the best decision ever made by some people. There is a time in most people’s life when they sit back and think that there must be something better in life. Some people have an affair, some people opt for plastic surgery or a fancy sports car and some people pack it all in, in search of a better life abroad. Statistics from the office of national statistics show that of the 300,000 citizens that leave the UK each year half head for Australia and New Zealand, 42,000 head for France and the USA/Canada and a massive 58,000 still head for the sunny shores of Spain, all in search of a life changing opportunity for the better. The prospect of a new home, new culture, new job, new language and new house prove all too irresistible for thousand of people, couples and families each and every year. With the proliferation of tv programmes catering for every whim of the expat lifestyle and dedicated channels on satellite television, of course the prospect of buying a dream villa set in fragrant almond groves with mountain view to the back, a pristine white washed village on one side and friendly locals to the other whiling to spend long lazy days drinking sangria and the azure Mediterranean glistening in the distance. A cooling swimming pool (designed to your own specification of course) sits by your side as you fondly remember the drudgery of life back in the fast lane. For some people this dream has turned into reality. One of my clients made the move some 4 years ago and have not had a single regret. Ignoring for the moment the change in the interest rates which have seriously affected the ability of many abroad to continue living la Vida loca. They one sunny afternoon in 2004 whilst in London visiting friends decided to go along to the ideal home exhibition or the day. Whilst perusing the many stands they came across trade stand with a mock villa with a very reasonable price tag…. the seed had been planted. Over the next few months they proceeded to send off for brochures, purchased magazines, viewed websites and did the research anyone considering making a move abroad would do. One evening whilst watching TV an advert caught their attention. “Thinking of moving to Spain????? Our experts are flying into the UK this weekend for a special exhibition at Jubilee suites at Chester racecourse!” With nothing to lose they jumped in the car and trundled off down the road for some no obligation perusing. Several hours later, they had booked themselves on a “Free Inspection Tour” or should I say the Spanish property experts had. They would be enjoying a 5 day 4 night luxury break in Spain’s Costa Blanca, staying in a 4 star hotel, all meals and accommodation would be paid for, their flight were subsidised so cost no more than £50 each, all they would have to pay for was drinks. They would be given an extensive area tour on their first day to find the areas that they liked as it was more important to get the location right than the property. The subsequent days would be spent looking for the property in the areas that they previously deemed suitable, what happened after that was anyone’s guess. So back in late 2004 off they left a cold wet and windy Britain and jetted into a balmy Alicante. With the temperature still in the mid 20’s the scene had already been set. They were met at the airport by their uniformed guide called Peter who with a friendly greeting took them out to their liveried car and drove them on the coast road down to their hotel. There was no mention of purchasing property and Pete chatted to them about how he came to be living out in Spain. They were later to learn that everything Pete said was virtually pre-determined by the powers that be, and the soft sell that they were experiencing was all part of a cleverly executed series of steps know as the seven steps.

Now there is nothing wrong with sales, after all everything is sold to some degree or other, but this was a non stop 5 day 4 night sales pitch that was clever due to its subtlety. I will cover the ins and outs, good and bad of the sales process in a future very interesting and revealing article. Peter the rep was very articulate and knowledgeable and had lived in Spain for a few years. It was obvious that he was trying to steer them into certain areas and styles of houses but they stuck to their guns and in the end found a beautiful site on the outskirts of a picturesque village nestled in the mountains some 30 km from the coast. It was an off plan development and they had a choice of house styles, plots and house orientations within the plot. The formalities of applying for NIE numbers, appointing legal representation, signing contracts and paying the obligatory €3000 property reservation fee were all completed with little or no fuss whilst still out in Spain. Some five days after embarking on their information obtaining, non obligation, FREE inspection visit they have committed to spending some €350,000 on a property, selling their property in the UK (not even for sale yet), selling their car, retiring …………………. You would be amazed at the amount of people who actually purchase on these trips. During the peak in the early to mid 2000’s the inspection trip companies expected their reps to sell to at least 40-50% of their clients. Many of these clients like my parents were on information gathering exercises with absolutely no intention of purchasing and some had never even been abroad before. In my clients case it proved to be the best move that they could have possibly made with very few snags along the line . They sold their property in the UK at the correct time. They purchased from a reputable builder on a good site in a great area and importantly they are surrounded by great neighbours. They have integrated into the local community and are learning the language. The above is an example of moving to Spain or anywhere else abroad for the right reason. Many do not. In my line of work snagging properties for clients I come across a wide variety of people and their reasons for making the move. The key I feel to making the move a long, happy and successful one is to come because you want to and not because you have to. In my next article I will uncover some of the practices of the free inspection tour companies and show you what to look out for and where you can save yourself a few pennies.

Maybe you have no idea what is the best gift to young golfers and an excellent book is a good choice. It’s never too soon to be looking for the right gift for that junior golfer in your family or at the club.

From the Canadian Professional Golfers’ Association comes the following:

Canadian PGA Master Professional and National Men’s Amateur Team Head Coach Henry Brunton, one of Canada’s top golf coaches, has joined forces with Michael Grange, one of Canada’s top sportswriters, to create Journey to Excellence: The Young Golfer’s Complete Guide to Achievement and Personal Growth.

Released this month, the book is designed to help aspiring young golfers maximize their potential, on and off the course. Drawing from his two decades of interaction with the game’s most respected educators, coaches and players, Brunton – Canadian PGA Master Professional and Head Coach of the RCGA National Men’s Amateur Team – moves beyond the traditional emphasis on the sport’s mechanical side and offers insight into what it takes to reach individual potential and achieve precise goals.

The lessons learned in trying to maximize golfing potential-time management, goal setting, dealing with success and failure and showing grace under pressure-are applicable across any number of disciplines. They are lessons that will prove beneficial on the course, but, more importantly, provide today’s youth a reference for excellence that also will serve them well in the classroom and at home.

“The singular purpose of publishing Journey to Excellence is to positively impact aspiring young golfers and the individuals who support their efforts–parents, coaches, volunteers and program administrators. I hope that this book makes the game more fun and rewarding for everyone who reads it.” Henry Brunton

TESTIMONIALS

“Henry has been a friend and trusted advisor for years. His knowledge – gained through his experience working with golfers of all levels, from beginners to elite performers – is collected in this book. Whether your goal is to become the best player at your club, play college golf or play on the PGA Tour, Journey to Excellence provides a roadmap to success that will not just help you become the best player you can be but also help you live a better life. It is a must read for any young golfer who is interested in improving and advancing in the game of golf.”

-J.T. Higgins, Head Men’s Golf Coach Texas A&M, 2009 NCAA Champions

I’ve had the opportunity to learn from Henry Brunton for many years as part of the training I received on the Canadian National Men’s Team. He is truly one of the top coaches in the game today and now that he’s written Journey to Excellence you can learn what I already know: Henry is a coach who will elevate your game, too.”

-Nick Taylor, Abbotsford, BC, #1 Ranked Amateur Golfer in the World

“I can’t think of anyone more qualified to write Journey to Excellence. Henry Brunton is the real deal. He understands very clearly what it takes to continually improve as a competitive golfer. He also understands very clearly the common pitfalls that await most young golfers who want to play tournament golf at the highest levels. Now anyone can avoid these mistakes with Henry’s insights.”

Niagara Falls is one of the most spectacular natural wonders on the face of the Earth, and also one of the world’s best-known tourist attractions. The falls are not the tallest falls in the world. They measure in at 54 meters tall (177 feet), and can be compared with Angel Falls in Venezuela, the tallest falls in the world which measure in at 979 meters (3212 feet) tall. Niagara Falls are however, a massively impressive sight to behold, because of the panoramic breadth of the falls, and the unbelievable volume of water that passes through them. The awe struck state that is inspired by the falls lends itself perfectly to a romantic atmosphere, making this a common honeymoon destination. In fact, it is sometimes referred to as the “Honeymoon Capital of the World”.The rushing water that passes through the falls descends into the Niagara Gorge, a depression in the ground that was created around 12,000 years ago. This happened at the time that the five Great Lakes were created by melting glaciers. One of the lakes known as Lake Erie ran downhill towards another called Lake Ontario, creating the Niagara River. The river passed through the Niagara escarpment, a geological transition zone of varying elevations, and this caused the water to massively back up at the entrance to the escarpment. This backup of water created the Niagara Gorge. The gorge continues to be deepened by erosion at a rate of 30 cm (12 inches) per year. The falls straddle the Canada-United States border. The Canadian side of the falls, known either as “Canadian Falls” or the “Horseshoe”, is generally agreed upon as the more impressive side. A border crossing exists at Niagara Falls, and is easy to cross provided that any necessary visa preparations have been taken care of. The Horseshoe gets its name from its U-shaped formation. This is the part of the falls you most likely see in photos and on postcards, as it carries nine times as much water volume as the falls on the American side of the border. Every minute 168,000 cubic meters (6 million cubic feet) of water passes over the lip of the falls, and flows at a rate of 56.3 kph (35 mph). The massive flow of water is a powerful thing to witness up close. There are numerous lookout points which give you a fantastic view of the falls. The most popular way to get a closer look of the falls is to take a boatride on the Maid of the Mist vessel which takes you almost right up to the base of the falls. Believe it or not you can also view the falls from behind at “Journey Behind the Falls”. For those highrollers with a little extra cash to spare, Niagara helicopter tours are a great option. All of these views are just as beautiful at night, due to night time illumination.Of course the falls are the main attraction of Niagara Falls, but there are other activities such as casinos, an indoor water park with a year-round tropical climate, fantastic golf courses, vineyards, spas and much more.

Getting started with paid online surveys and secret shopper jobs is a simple process when you get the right information and the right tools. Then it works like a charm and you grow a profitable stream of income from all these opportunities

Mystery Shoppers in the News

Mystery shopping is a prospering business and more and more companies are relying on the shoppers’ anonymous feedback to determine how they can improve customer service.

In an article titled “Spies like us; Mystery shoppers keep eye on customer service” (The Washington Times, July 2004) we can learn that mystery shopping has become a “critical marketing tool” used by companies to develop customer loyalty:

“Consumers have more choices than ever before. The smart companies realize they can compete by creating an optimized customer experience.

More companies are relying on the shoppers’ anonymous feedback to determine how they can improve customer service, which plays an important role in business transactions.

‘If the customer has had a bad experience, they’re going to go somewhere else,’ said Jeff Marr, vice president of Walker Information, which provides research on customer loyalty.’When it comes to retailing, you’re only as good as your last interaction.’

The mystery shopping industry has grown over the past decade as more companies – from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies – have tried to focus more heavily on customer service, officials say. Companies such as McDonald’s, Starbucks, Home Depot, Kinko’s and Giant Food are just a handful of the companies that use mystery shoppers.

The industry has expanded from typical service-oriented clients – such as restaurants, retailers and hotels – to industries like banks, insurance companies, car dealerships, funeral homes and apartment buildings.

“This is a critical marketing tool,” said Jeff Hall, who is chief executive of a mystery shopping company in Michigan. “Companies need to connect with their customers – not just with a fake smile.”

“Mystery shopping is nothing more than receiving feedback from anonymous customers,” said Paige Hall, president and chief executive officer of a mystery shopping company in Atlanta.

It is estimated that between 600,000 to 700,000 active mystery shoppers – also known as secret shoppers – are in the United States.

~~ Would you take part in this growing trend? ~~

In this same article we read the story of Max Jakeman, a secret shopper working at it in his spare time. His story can be yours:

“Max Jakeman is an undercover agent – for a pizza chain. He also has spied on fast-food chains, upscale restaurants, movie theaters, bowling alleys and golf courses.

The Alexandria resident is one of the thousands of mystery shoppers who get paid to give feedback on their overall customer experience…

Mr. Jakeman, who is in the Army, mystery shops between three and four times a week, usually on weekends and evenings. He calls his answering machine at home and leaves notes about his experience so he doesn’t forget details before he has to write the report.

Mr. Jakeman thinks his job helps make a difference.

“I’m a consumer and I’ve been places where I’ve been treated badly,” Mr. Jakeman said. “With mystery shopping you feel like you’re making an impact.”

The shoppers get paid different amounts for their work, depending on the industry and degree of difficulty. For instance, grocery stores pay $10 to $25, movie theaters pay $10 to $50 and florists pay $45 to $100 per assignment.

Mr. Jakeman brings home $300 to $400 a month in cash, in addition to about $1,000 in perks including free movies, free oil changes, free pizza and free rounds of golf.”

Industry experts say “a full-time mystery shopper who works 40 hours a week can make about $40,000 a year.”

Wow… This is for real and you can be part of it if you want.

The Washington Times, the Wall Street Journal (see the former issue of the Get Paid Coach) and other newspapers publish articles on mystery shopping because it’s a growing business and hundred of thousands of people make top dollars to shop and have fun.

Would you like to bring home $300 to $400 a month in cash, in addition to about $1,000 in perks just for shopping between three to four times a week like Max Jakeman?

Would you prefer to work at it full time and make $40,000 a year?

Mystery shoppers are needed all the time and there are jobs all over the US and Canada but also in Australia and UK.

The best way to go is to subscribe to a professional resource for secret shopper jobs. You will get a step-by-step guide on how to get started successfully (a must for new shoppers) AND you’ll have access to an extensive database of shopping jobs in your country and in your state.

The ATP is a men’s professional tennis group that runs the circuit for the men’s game, and it is a group that takes pride in its strengths. One of the biggest strengths of the ATP is its ability to reach tennis fans online. For instance, during the Madrilena Mutua Madrid Masters the site received in October more than half a million unique visitors to the group’s website. Nearly two million users were reached on the site over the course of the past year with nearly ten million impression pages. This equals an increase in web traffic by nearly forty percent. Also, the Spanish language ATP tennis site has increased its web traffic by nearly fifty percent last year.ATP tennis is continuing to grow around the world. One of the fastest growing places for ATP tennis is Europe. The new CEO of the ATP tennis group in Europe, Andy Anson, is a former executive in the United Kingdom who has a Masters degree in Business Administration. Even though former CEO Horst Klosterkemper will be leaving the ATP association will still be in good hands in the continent.ATP tennis also continues to work with humanitarian efforts around the world. During the Shanghai Masters Tennis Cup the ATP tennis group worked to raise funds for UNICEF. For instance, during an auction for UNICEF at Shanghai’s Stadium of Qi Zhong a shirt signed by ATP tennis star Roger Federer went for 28,000 RMB. Also, the Feder-Bear bean bag doll was sold by UNICEF at the stadium, raising nearly 75,000 RMB for the group. The sponsorship deals for ATP tennis are especially strong. Some of the largest businesses in the world sponsor ATP tennis, including Mercedez-Benz, Lacoste and South Africa Railways, among others.Overall, ATP tennis is a group that features some of the world’s best tennis stars and has a great presence around the world and online. Not only does it have some great sponsors but it also has a strong humanitarian presence. Also, the future of ATP tennis is continuing to grow with new leadership.

October 9, 2005
Fall is one of the most beautiful seasons in Ontario, and after last weeks early fall colour tour through the Kawarthas east of Toronto, it was time yesterday to check out the areas west of Toronto. My husband and I set off on the highway, left the 401 at Mississauga Road and drove north into rolling agricultural farmland. Our first interesting village along the way was Glen Williams, a little hamlet outside of Georgetown, whose former sawmill now houses more than 30 artists and artisans. We headed north along the scenic Credit River and drove up onto the Niagara Escarpment and literally stumbled over the Cheltenham Brickworks, a now abandoned brickmaking factory dating back to 1930 that utilized the area’s clay soil to manufacture bricks for Toronto’s housing boom. Abandoned industrial buildings always hold a strange fascination for me, and they offer great opportunities for curious photographers.
Not far away is another very unique area, the Cheltenham Badlands, a unique geological formation of weathered terra cotta hued rock, that originated as a result of deforestation and overgrazing during the early 1900s. It’s a fascinating landscape of undulating hills of red clay with greenish stripes, due to the soil’s red and gray iron oxide content.
The 800-kilometre-long Bruce Trail that goes all the way from Niagara Falls to the tip of the Bruce Peninsula snakes through this region, and there are several entry points close by. The Niagara Escarpment is a truly unique habitat and home to 300 bird species, 53 mammals, 36 reptiles and amphibians, 90 fish and 100 varieties of special interest flora including 37 types of wild orchids. UNESCO named Ontario’s Niagara Escarpment a World Biosphere Reserve in 1990. It’s a popular spot among hikers and naturalists.
We headed east and down the Niagara Escarpment again and drove north in its shadow to the Forks of the Credit area and the quaint little village of Belfountain. This popular excursion destination was founded in the 1820 by Scottish and Irish immigrants, many of whom worked in local quarries, railroads, mills and tanneries. Today the village has souvenir shops, a beautiful country store, a spa, and an ice cream parlour.
From Belfountain we drove westwards through the town of Erin into Wellington County, an area of fertile farmland, punctuated by rivers, gorges, small lakes, and golf courses. Our next stop on this country drive was the little town of Fergus, a town known for its Scottish Heritage which Fergus celebrates every year, usually during the second week of August, with the Fergus Scottish Festival. During this three-day event, visitors from all over the world enjoy all aspects of traditional Highland Games with a wee bit of modern flare tossed in.
Fergus has a number of historic buildings in the downtown area, and a major draw in this little town is the Fergus Market, housed in the historic Beatty Brothers Farm Implement Manufacturing building which overlooks the Beatty Dam and dates back to the 1830s. The foundry was the first industrial location in Fergus and today houses a diverse collection of merchants, food retailers, and artisans.
Just outside Fergus is the Wellington County Museum and Archives. The museum stands majestically overlooking the once mill-laden Grand River. Built of locally quarried limestone in 1877 as the House of Industry and Refuge, this landmark structure then provided shelter for the “deserving poor”, the aged and the homeless for almost a century. The museum now gives visitors an opportunity to experience the cultural legacy left by the intrepid settlers to this vast county of rolling hills, stony fields, deep gorges and quaint villages.
Another few kilometres down the road is the country town of Elora, one of Ontario’s favourite weekend excursion destinations. Elora is situated in a beautiful nature area with glacial rock formations, and its most stunning geological feature is the Elora River which plunges over a number of rapids into the spectacular Elora Gorge. The mill sitting at the top of the gorge, aptly called the Elora Mill, has been turned into an upscale fine dining restaurant and country inn with 32 guest rooms.
The Elora Gorge features several kilometres of 80-foot cliffs, caverns, rapids and quiet pools. During the summer, hiking along the cliffs and inner-tubing through the gorge are favourite pastimes. Hiking trails start right at the Elora Mill. During the winter months visitors indulge in cross-country skiing and scenic nature walks through the area. The Grand River also provides excellent opportunities for fly-fishing, canoeing and kayaking.
The Elora-Cataract trail crosses 47 kilometres of scenic countryside. Between Fergus and Elora the trail passes by the Elora Quarry Conservation Area, an abandoned quarry that is a favourite spot for a refreshing dip. The quiet farmland around Elora is perfect for long country bike rides, and numerous golf courses round out the activities on offer.
During our visit yesterday, Elora was nicely dressed up for Halloween – a variety of ghouls, ghosts, spiders, monsters and witches adorned the buildings, balconies and lamp posts along the town’s main streets. The town also offers a variety of shops, antique stories, galleries and diverse dining establishments. Horse-drawn coach rides throughout town are also a popular activity for tourists.
Not far from Elora you can visit Ontario’s last remaining covered bridge in Montrose, and you’ll have a chance to explore Old Order Mennonite Country. Summer brings a variety of festivals to this area, including the Elora Festival which is a one-month musical showcase of internationally acclaimed musicians and singers.
About 15 minutes south of Elora is the major city of this area: Guelph is a university and manufacturing city with a population of more than 100,000. Its diverse economy also includes high technology enterprises and today Guelph is one of the fastest growing economic regions in all of Canada. Similar to Fergus and Elora, Guelph was founded by Scottish settlers in the 1820s at the junction of the Eramosa and Speed Rivers. The University of Guelph Department of Scottish Studies links academic research to the community of those with Scottish ancestry. The city features many trails for hiking, biking, skiing and horseback riding and a variety of riverside dining establishments.
Guelph’s most stunning architectural feature is the impressive Church of Our Lady Immaculate, a Gothic-Revival structure begun in 1877 and completed in 1888. The twin towers, more than 200 feet high, were not completed until 1926. The Church of Our Lady Immaculate is one of Ontario’s largest and most impressive churches.
This time we didn’t have a chance to explore Guelph in detail as it was getting late afternoon and we had to head back. But there will be another time for exploring this beautiful, historic city and other surrounding communities. But our little excursion out of the city was a perfect Saturday getaway for exploring the history and countryside just outside of Toronto.

If you’ve ever visited The Shuswap and Mara Lakes region, you’d have to agree that it’s not only one of British Columbia’s most beautiful regions, but also one of the most spectacular in North America. By locating its Shuswap Villas development here, Shuswap Real Estate took advantage of this setting to create an ideal community. First, there’s the setting itself. You’re surrounded by two of Canada’s most pristine lakes with the Monsashee Mountains offering a spectacular backdrop. You could be perfectly content here doing nothing more than watching the sunsets. But Shuswap Real Estate also happened to place their community only a kilometer from the Sicamous Centre. When you’ve had your fill of the peace and quiet of the woods, Sicamous provides the cure. It’s a thriving community with great restaurants, shopping and an award-winning golf course. Sicamous is also the centre of a range of outdoor activity, from snowshoeing to water skiing, Plus, you’re only a half-day’s drive from this Shuswap Real Estate community to either Calgary or Vancouver. Then there are the villas themselves. Shuswap Real Estate did a wonderful job of designing Shuswap Villas to match the beauty of its surroundings. These are luxury villas in every sense. They’re spacious. They feature hardwood floors, top-of-the-line appliances and beautifully appointed kitchens and baths. The picture windows offer about as pretty a view as you could ever wake up to. And since this is the mountains, Shuswap Real Estate made sure you had a fireplace to curl up to on those cold winter nights. There’s also a spacious amenity building with a range of activities. Shuswap Villas really is a community for everyone. You can retire here. You can vacation here. You can start a new life here. In Shuswap Villas, Shuswap Real Estate built a community that brings together the best of every lifestyle.
